Dear Music Lovers!
Welcome to the 2017-2018 Parlor Series at Dupuy’s Landing. After somewhat of a hiatus, we are back with a beautiful line-up for your listening enjoyment.
See below for dates to lock into your diary, but first up news of a new addition to our series, Mary Ann Mc Sweeney’s “Urban Fado Jazz Project”.
We are thrilled to host a CD release party for Mary Ann on 1 October from 3:00 – 5:00 in the parlor at Dupuy’s Landing. McSweeney, a talented bassist and bandleader, a resourceful composer and an imaginative arranger, is based in NYC. Along with being full time professional bassist, she is on the faculty for the Middle School Jazz Academy at Lincoln Center and the New York Jazz Workshop.

The beautiful melodies of Fado resonated for me immediately. My great great great Grandparents are from Portugal. This music originated in Portugal around in the 1800’s. The sadness, the sigh of the voice, the story of fate told by the singer inspired me to compose music that is Fado. Images and smells of Portugal have surrounded my process. The music is heard in alleys, clubs and concert halls telling a story of the Portuguese people. The string bass brings a melodic and low supportive voice to the music. I like to keep the form of the traditional Fado song, but I have also expanded it to leave room for improvisation. Musicians can layer their voice onto the form of the piece. Being a long time jazz artist, I bring new grooves and new chord structures to the Fado form. I want to bring a new voice and vibe to this music and share the cultural diversity it has to offer.
