Hello dear listeners!
We are thrilled to welcome The Ben Sidran Trio to our next piano series concert!
It’s been a long and varied journey for Sidran—from playing boogie-woogie piano as a six year old in Racine, Wisconsin, leaning into his jazz records, to growing up to play boogie-woogie piano around the world. Together with his son Leo on drums and Alexis Cuadrado on bass, they will bring their cool and easy-going style to the Parlor Series.
The Ben Sidran Trio
In his 60-year career, Ben Sidran’s love of music has led him to be a pianist, a singer-songwriter, an author, a record producer and a music journalist among other things. He has been his own short-order cook, juggling his own career and his projects. But we all return to our core, that is, the music that fueled our desires and tacitly directed our lives. His core was/is modern jazz piano of the late ‘40s, 50s and early 60s. The trios of Bud Powell, Horace Silver and Sonny Clark among others informed his vocabulary and his imagination.
The Chicago Sun refers to Ben Sidran as a “Renaissance man cast adrift in a modern world” and The Times of London, calls him “the first existential jazz rapper.”
Leo Sidran is a Grammy winning multi-instrumentalist musician, producer, arranger, composer, recording artist, and podcast host. Additionally, he has toured with (and produced records for) his father, Ben, for over 25 years.
Barcelona-born and Brooklyn-based Alexis Cuadrado is an award-winning composer, producer, bandleader, bassist and educator. He has become one of the most sought-after musicians in the New York scene. NPR music says: “Listen to Cuadrado’s compositions and you’ll find every reason to take him seriously.” NY magazine: “His intricate and sharply defined compositions show that he’s tapped into something much deeper.”
Ben Sidran, Leo Sidran and Alexis Cuadrado have been playing together as a trio for the last decade, but this will be their only New York performance in 2023!
